A deviated septum is a condition where the wall between the two nostrils becomes crooked, resulting in breathing issues for the patient. There can be multiple causes for this troubling condition, including genetics, injuries, or trauma. While Rhinoplasty procedures are often relied on as a means of addressing breathing issues, they are primarily cosmetic procedures. Septoplasty is the only treatment available that primarily focuses on correcting a deviated septum and correcting breathing problems.

What is a Septoplasty?

A septoplasty is a surgical procedure that is specifically designed to address a deviated septum. The septum is a structure in the nose that is composed of cartilage and bone. It sits in the nasal cavity and separates the two nostrils. When a septum becomes crooked (deviated), it can lead to breathing issues, snoring, and other unwanted conditions. Septoplasty works by straightening out the crooked septum, facilitating better airflow and a major reduction in breathing issues.

There are various reasons that patients undergo a Septoplasty in Austin. Some patients have a deviated septum at birth, and others develop it later in life due to some form of trauma. Beyond breathing issues, other challenges that afflict these individuals include frequent nosebleeds, snoring, and sleep apnea.

What is the Procedure Like?

While a Septoplasty is often lumped in with rhinoplasty, the two procedures are quite different. While both procedures involve making changes to the cartilage and bone of the nose, the primary goal of Septoplasty is to straighten out the septum. Septoplasty procedures are carried out exclusively under general anesthesia.

A Septoplasty procedure takes place entirely inside the patient's nose. An incision (cut) is created on one side of the patient's nose, and then the mucosa (a thin membrane that serves as a cover and protection for the septum) is lifted. This enables the surgeon to fully reshape the septum's bone and cartilage.

What is the Recovery Process Like?

Patients who undergo a Septoplasty procedure are usually able to go back to work or school a week after the procedure. It usually takes about 2 weeks for them to fully get back to their regular routine. However, this will vary depending on the type of work the patient does and the extent of their Septoplasty procedure. Patients will have to come in for follow-up visits for the next 3 to 4 months following their treatment.
